Once the Butlins camp was closed, it was bought by Majestic Holidays, who announced plans to build a new £15 million development on the site. However, these plans never left the drawing board and the camp reopened without much change.

During the early 90's, the entertainment buildings were given a fresh look when they were reclad and the swimming pool complex was fully refurbished.

Due to a mountain of complaints about the standard of accomodation, a clause was inserted in the terms and conditions stating that they could only be sued for 20% of the cost of the holiday as this was considered to be the amount the accomodation was worth.

The Barry Island Resort's last open season was 1996. During the October of that year, major damage was caused by storms. Assisted by problems renewing the entertainment licence and falling numbers, the resort was abandoned.
